Norwegian spelling norms allow for considerable variation, often
referred to as norm clusters in the Norwegian tradition. In Bokmål, the
two ends of the spectrum of variation, Radical Bokmål and Moderate/
Conservative Bokmål are widely recognized, and have support in various
organizations. Establishing these subtags will allow for more fine-
grained identification of these varieties in corpora and other cases
where language tagging is important. The terms moderate and conservative
are often used interchangeably. The subtag hognorsk (Høgnorsk), which
represents a radical form of Nynorsk, is already present in the subtag
registry.
